ABOUT
LA based artist, Dustin Krapes, is a singer/songwriter originally from the banal suburbs of the Inland Empire. Feeding his addiction to synthesized sound experimentation and crafting songs that engage listeners, Krapes has produced numerous albums and EPs since his time with now defunct projects Halloween Swim Team, and former solo-moniker, Habits. More recently, with his productions, Krapes found himself submerged in a curse of obstacles like crashed hard drives, band personnel fluctuations, seasonal depression, and the typical perks of being an obsessive compulsive artist. Having rode the wave, allowing life’s setbacks to fuel his lyrical reflections, Krapes now emerges from the mire with a body of solo work presented in his new album, Control.
Control is an electronic rock blend of progressive synth pop with a post punk ethos, delivering a poignant exploration of existential angst with seamless finesse. Through buzzed-out synths, intricate guitar melodies, pulsating electronic rhythms, and understated vocals, the album exudes a sense of frenetic poise, as Krapes delves into themes of internal conflict, fractured relationships, and abstract meditations on the inner and outer cosmos. Both sonically dynamic and emotionally resonant, Control is a compelling journey through untapped realms of electronic rock, capable of captivating listeners into head-bobbing introspection.
Aside from his solo material, Krapes has been delving into producing and mixing for other fellow local artists, as well as running his Utopian Voids events label, curating lineups and designing visuals for live shows at LA and IE venues.
Krapes resides in a tranquil cabin down by the river with his cat, where he binges documentaries, stand-up comedy and coffee, tinkering with analog synths in Ableton Live to craft his songs.
On one occasion whilst tinkering, after having left his cabin door open, he found himself standing a mere six feet from a bear at his porch. With only the still forest air between them, he calmly and swiftly shut his door. It was then that the bear knew for certain Dustin was not interested in any magazine subscriptions.
